Drink Deeper

Daniel B. Kahn is a co-founder and the brewmaster of Buckbean Brewing Company and also a trained engineer and chef. Brewing offers Daniel a compelling, vital mix of science and art. ”There’s a great deal of technical skill involved in turning raw ingredients into beer – but there’s a lot of creativity too,” Daniel said. “Balancing the flavors of malt, hops, and yeast. How you combine the ingredients. How you interpret the dozens of different styles of brewing.”
Daniel creates beers that are balanced, full flavored, appealing to a variety of palates and excellent partners to food. Because of his chefing background, Daniel brings an extra level of discernment and skill to the choosing and blending of beer ingredients and flavors.
Before becoming Buckbean’s brewmaster, Daniel was brewmaster at Buzzards Bay Brewing in Westport, Mass. and prior to that, at Riverside Brewing Company in Riverside, Calif.
The craft and quality of Daniel’s beer has been recognized by consuders and colleagues, including gold, silver, and bronze medal wins at the Great American Beer Festival and World Beer Cup to name a couple.
Daniel holds a B.S. in engineering science from the University of Texas at Austin and a professional brewer’s certificate from the University of California at Davis’ highly regarded brewing science program.
Doug a co-founder of Buckbean Brewing Company, a native Nevadan and a former U.S. Forest Service biologist, leads sales and marketing for the company. His responsibilities include vendor relations, overseeing Buckbean’s tap room, and spreading the flavors of Buckbean at tastings, pint nights, and local and regional beer festivals.
“I want to get the beer into people’s mouths,” Doug said. “The thing that sells the beer is the beer itself.”
Doug had a pint-size epiphany at the now legendary Oregon Brewers Festival, which he first attended in 1988, the festival’s debut year. Ever since then, during his extensive travels in the United States, Latin America, Europe, Australia and New Zealand, Doug has sought out brewpubs and microbreweries. “Wherever I went, I was always an observer of brewing,” Doug said. “Now, I’m in a position to start a brewery.”
Doug, a Reno native, will also focus on community outreach, including partnerships with organizers of charitable events. “We want to make Buckbean synonymous with Northern Nevada and Tahoe,” he said.
Doug holds a B.A. in biology from Whittier College and a M.S. in Resource Conservation from University of Montana where he combined his schoolwork with Peace Corps in Guatemala.
